Introduction to Rabbit Care. Taking Care Of the Pet Rabbit

Rabbit is a good choice for people looking for a friendly, tender and cute pet for themselves or their children. However some people believe a pet rabbit to be easy to maintain. The truth is quite the contrary. A rabbit like any other pet needs care and attention and most importantly comfort.

Before you bring it home, you should prepare taking care of the pet rabbit before hand, such as following.

Rabbits Cage

One of the main areas to focus is the rabbits dwelling which is the cage also known as a hutch. Keeping the size of the rabbit in mind, the hutch should be spacious allowing the rabbit to move about freely. Rabbits are clean animals by nature and like to have their cages clean. Therefore, the base of a rabbit’s hutch should be half solid and half net. They will use the net side as a washroom and the solid side for sleeping. Place hay in the sleeping area to provide relief and comfort to the rabbit.

Your Rabbit’s Diet

Rabbits have a sensitive digestive system and it is essential to keep it in mind when planning your rabbit’s meal. Pellets are high in protein and fiber and should be an essential part of the rabbit’s diet. Rabbits usually enjoy hay so it is a good choice to provide them with ample amount to chew on. Vegetables should be included in their diet as they are high in vitamins. Include vegetables one by one in the rabbit’s diet; so that it can be determined which ones suit it best.
While taking care of the pet rabbit remember to provide fresh water at all times. It is vital to clean the water dish at least once a week. Rabbits are sensitive animals and need to be kept clean and healthy at all times. Clean the rabbit’s hutch frequently and provide fresh hay both for bedding and chewing.

Happy Pet

Pet your rabbit occasionally and play with him often. Take the rabbit out of its cage once in a while but as rabbits are sensitive animals, they need to feel secure. They might scratch and hesitate a little but eventually it will know you mean no harm. When picking up your rabbit, place a firm hand on its tummy and hold it from the back of its neck giving it a protected and safe feeling.

Rabbits are quite intelligent and very curious. They are quite active and playful and find solace in the simplest of things. A rabbit will enjoy shredding paper or cardboard or play with a small ball. A bored rabbit becomes agitated and goes into depression, getting various disorders which can lead to it becoming overweight or destructive. So while taking care of the pet rabbit keep in mind to provide it with some toys and to spend some time with him.

Rabbit Training

Rabbits can be trained especially to use the litter box and to avoid chewing and digging of various house ornaments. It takes time for a rabbit to develop such habits and patience from the pet owner is a must. But, in the end, it proves fruitful and it is even sometimes safe to let the rabbit loose around the house. So, always keep all these things in mind.
